Week one in LA has been a trip. Slowly got settled in as the last of my stuff slowly arrived from NY. It's definitely a different a feel from New York. People here are nice but rude at the same time. Especially if you are driving. NY rules still apply.

You can cut people off when merging but often people will let you merge in if you are exiting a parking lot. Also you always can cross the street without any problems but only if you cross right at the cross walk when the sign says go. Otherwise, good luck. But always look first because it's generally ok to run red lights and roll through stop signs. Still trying to figure out the skating in the streets rule since you can actually get jaywalking tickets here. For safety's sake, of course, as most people drive here, most drive pretty aggro and stops are just "suggested". Craze combo.

And parking SUCKS. Just like trying to find a legal spot in Midtown in the middle of the day. You're screwed pretty much everywhere from the supermarket to the taco stand. Good luck trying to find parking ANYWHERE you go. We luckily have parking spots in our building, and although getting around by bus has been a steep learning curve; I'm glad I don't commute by car. I HATED parking stress back home and I don't remotely enjoy it here. There's traffic at all point of the day, not unlike New York. Try driving across the Cross Bronx around lunchtime. Impossible. So that which everyone complains about is a given.

Yeah soooo the weather is insane. 80 degrees every day all the time. It's January and my head is sunburned. I'd wear a hat, but it's kinda fucking hot. Yeah, I know. Whatevs. Been using the dry weather to my advantage & finally got to hit up Lincoln Skatepark. I've been watching clips back home getting hyped to finally roll through the park. Most of the new LA parks are more plaza style with stairs, rails & ledges- fun in their own right. But with a small bag of tricks these parks can get a bit boring. Lincoln is fun with it's snake run style set-up to Jersey Barrier or huge ollie hip. So fun. The quarterpipe facing the barrier is amazing too. Volcano style: super steep, super fun.

The cement, no hang-up lips are perfect and every section grinds well. Even during crowded sessions, the kids mainly hit the stairs so it's all good. Just don't wander the neighborhood too much like I did looking for "authentic local food". I was informed by the kids in the area that I skated through some of the worst gang affiliated streets in Lincoln Heights. Next time I'll stick to the 7-11 directly across the street from the park. Also the bus ride transfers right in the heart of Chinatown, so it's a no-brainer to just wait and get my roast pig on rice after a session. No cholo action necessary.

Also finally hit up the infamous Stoner Park. Even at 11am mid week the park had a good group of kids there. The quarterpipe hip set up is amazing with more grindable concrete lips. It's like sessioning a curb atop a bank. No crazy metal coping no stress. The rest of the park is fun as well with ledges and flat bars galore.

That Sebo kid was there killing the place. Backside double flip the ramp to ramp gap as well as a backside flip up the dish to stage gap. An easy 7 foot distance step up. Just his random quarter tricks were mindblowing from back noseblunts like axle stalls to switch nose bluntsides to fakie tail stall 2 pivot fakie-in to hip floater ollies every which way switch & regs. Couldn't help but fan out on the trick bank.

Still feel like I'm only here on vacation as Jillian & I have our first real apartment with all brand new fancy Ashley furniture. Seems kinda craze. I do miss my car, but selling it has afforded us a brand new crib with all the nice furniture we always dreamed of. No sketchy first floor Queens apartment with a nice view of a brick wall. And although I have no real toys to show for the sale, it has also afforded me a semi-retirement budget before I'm back on the grind with a 7 day a week 9-9 job. But until then I plan to try and enjoy LA, although I still think it's too fucking hot here but I can't really complain about that as the rest of the world is actually toiling through the brutality of winter. My bad. Come visit homies! Let's go skate.

- You hear guests singing "Peelings" or "My Way" on karaoke.

- You are greeted and hug by a Tita Baby and/or a Tito Boy.

- There's a goat or kambing 'papait' being warmed up and the men are already in their watering hole starting the 'kilawen' and 'sisig' pulutan with their favorite Blue Label or Hennesy XO drinks. Very cold San Miguel Light or white wine is also served for those suffering from gout.

- There's a crazy fat woman with a camera going around the room snapping away and yelling, "Uy peeeek-chuuur for sobenir!"

- You enter a family party and you "Mano" to half the old crowd and when you leave you have to say goodbye to EVERYONE that's related to you as a sign of respect.

- You end up saying hello and goodbye for a total of 30-40 minutes.

- You will also hear an old male's out-of-tune voice on the karaoke trying hard to imitate Frank Sinatra or Elvis Presley's voice.

- Uncles and Aunties are now doing the line dance - 'Electric Slide', 'todo- todo', etc., and do other ballroom dancing feats as if they are still in their teenage years.

- Among the younger guests, there's at least one or more with the name: JP, JJ, JT,TJ, DJ, AJ, RJ, LJ, Lingling, Ningning, Bingbing,Tingting, Dingding, Wengweng, Bongbong, Dongdong, etc.

- All the old aunties and guests are already wrapping up food to take home while more guests are still coming.

- You have the Pacquiao fight on the illegal cable boxes on the 70" LCD in the movie room, the 10 yr-old 50" CRT in the living room, the 15 yr-old 30" tube in the breakfast nook, the 20 yr-old 15" tube in the kitchen, the 30 yr-old 13" tube in the garage and the little portable by the BBQ grill or gazebo because TVs are NEVER retired in a Filipino household, they merely get demoted or moved to whichever room doesn't have a TV yet(hahaha), then it ends up in the balikbayan box to be sent to a relative back home, and it ends up being the main TV at the house living room again.

- The aunties and other female guests are showing off their "designer" Louis Vuitton and Coach bags that they secretly bought at Divisoria, Tiangge or in a local swap-meet.

- Someone is always in the kitchen constantly cleaning up, and you're not sure if she's the hired part-time maid or a relative, but you greet and kiss her on the cheek anyway.

- Relatives/friends will ask you where you work and if it's a retail job or if you work at an amusement park, they'll ask if you can get them a discount or special coupon.

- The lumpia is gone in 5 minutes and they are frying up another batch while the large Litson didn't last 15 minutes and it looks like it was swarmed by hungry piranhas, even the apple in the pig's mouth is missing.

- What starts as a religious gathering turns into an illegal gambling set up by the end of the night!

- Elder men are in the garage playing posoy-dos, or poker or 31, the women are in the kitchen gossiping, or are playing mahjong, the other people are in the entertainment room singing and dancing the night away, and the kids are outside playing."

With some textbook fall temperatures & the kids back in school, It's been nice to enjoy some great sessions at my local Astoria Park skatepark. I've been finally been able to get back some of my quarterpipe tricks, most of which I haven't had a good handle on since having a ramp in my apartment some 10plus years ago. It's been a blessing to get back a taste of that Mike Carroll mini ramp magic. Oh, back disaster reverts, how I have missed you.

Great clip but shit audio.

It's satisfying to finally carve out my niche at the park with some lines after having to dodge not BMXers nor Bladers but these Premium Leather Low Top Vans Wearing, High Water Khaki, Club Monaco Extra Medium Button-Up, $100 haircut hipster skaters that can clog the park from time to time. They battle outfits & step hop/ wallie lines with each other like a scene from Aging Fat Ass Animal Kingdom. Sorry guys, there's only one Alex Olson.

I think I bit of my recent success is attributed to my succumb to peer pressure from the crew. I have for years been skating a 7.75 width board, Indy 129s, 50mm super skinny GOLD wheels. In my head, I skate flatground & ledges. But in reality, I have 3 ledge tricks and shove-its aren't a flip trick by any stretch of the imagination. So recently, I upgraded to an 8.1 deck, Indy 139s, & 52mm Spitfire Streetburners and haven't felt this comfortable on a board in years. So if anyone may have a hook-up at Kayo, I'll gladly buy a box of 8.1 Expedition Team Boards, because Eastern is all sold out.

But at least for now, my board works, my shoes work and it's warm enough that this old man doesn't need more than a few axle stalls to warm-up. I can live the dream for just a few more weeks until winter creeps in and I lose all my tricks until next year.

*Note Carroll Warlock Tre Flip Stance from the previous clip @3:17. Is that even possible? I know tre-flips are more a scoop pressure flip trick than a 360 shove-it kickflip, but the way he does it seems unfathomable like Appleyard in his Habitat clip in Photosynthesis. I'd buy the iTunes pay per view how-to vid if these guys would ever even consider it.

So perhaps with some perserverance and a great bit of luck I can bring down my ratio of landing 360 flips from 1/100 to 1/50. Like Barkley and his golf swing I may be forever fucked, but if I had a bit more patience to practice and didn't have a terminal fear of messing up my always perfect griptape job, my dream may come true. But I swear I haven't had tre flips on lock since Gabriel Rodriguez had a board on the shelf.

"Mayer Hawthorne just makes great soul music. The crazy thing is that he's really a hardcore Hip Hop fan and DJ. It's no surprise that he got his start getting signed by Peanut Butter Wolf to the independent label Stones Throw. What I enjoy about his music is that people from all walks of life can relate to his music young and old. As a crate digger I can easily identify with his style because this is the type of music I dig for to listen to and sample. As I write this Mayer is slated to appear on Letterman tomorrow so I think he's well on his way to becoming a household name soon so get in the know.

Breakdown: Here’s how the story goes. N.O.R.E. reaches out to Nas after murking some cat and throwing him in his trunk in the mall parking lot. Turns out Esco knows the kid, and now they have to dispose of the body without getting knocked. This is definitely some movie shit.

Back in the 90s I was obsessed with mix tapes. I would take regular trips to Burkina on Houston, Canal Street, that "kiosk" on W14th, & DJ shows to pick up the newest shit. I still have a grip of those tapes which aren't in the greatest condition due to time & wear. But with the beauty of the internet I have been able to unearth some of my favorites. Enjoy.
